The evolutionary changes that have occurred in health promotion throughout the past two decades, and the knowledge gained through these changes, have important implications for the practice of family nursing. Of particular importance is the distinction that has been made between a service model of health care and the promotion of health. This article compares and contrasts family nursing thatfocuses on the servicing of health problems with health-promoting family nursing that emphasizes the enhancement offamily capacity. This comparison includes an examination of the differing philosophical foundations underlying service provision and health promotion and an exploration of the contrasting interests that govern the nursing practices within each approach.
