Abstract
Democracy in America argues that active involvement in common concerns is the foundation of American society. According to Tocqueville, "Citizens who are bound to take part in public affairs must turn from the private interest and occasionally take a look at something other than themselves." Anyone who desires to take the step and interact with others within their community must speak the "the language of citizen leadership." However, to speak this language well certain "democratic arts" must be mastered.
