Abstract
Office automation or office augmentation with new computer-based technology requires a more thorough system-wide task analysis than is often done with the implementation of a new system. The physical, social, psychological, and prestige aspects of many of the new systems being developed in offices are not fully understood. Piecemeal implementation in one area, such as word-processing, may not improve productivity of the overall operation because the demands on people have not been assessed. An example is discussed, showing the controversy in office desk heights, which seems trivial, but the implications are important and apparently are not being widely appreciated.
