Two experiments compared data entry tasks using color or monochromatic displays. Overall, small consistent improvements in throughput rates were demonstrated for subjects (Ss) who used color displays. Further analyses pointed out some of the conditions under which color is beneficial and related the effectiveness of color to task complexity and the number of tasks performed. Several guidelines for the use of color displays are offered.
