Abstract
The National Coal Board established an Ergonomics Branch in the Institute of Occupational Medicine in 1975. The current Branch contains over twenty human-scientists and a full technical support facility.
The structure of the team, the relationship with the coal mining industry (including production, engineering and trades union aspects), and the programme are outlined.
A brief description of the role of the E.E.C. in the development of ergonomics in the coal and steel industries is included.
