The U.S. Army's Patriot missile system features many advanced automated capabilities. The sophistication of this system raises the possibility that human intervention will actually degrade its performance. Efforts are underway to develop a performance measure that may be used to gauge these effects. A tentative measure has been derived and is currently being validated and refined. Present and future applications for such a metric are discussed.
