Abstract
Recent analyses of military equipment design have revealed deficiencies in consideration of operator/maintainer manual equipment handling. Equipment handling tasks include: lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, carrying and manual manipulation. Deficiencies in military equipment design are reviewed and an ongoing Navy program for their rectifications is outlined. One aspect of this program, equipment handling modeling, is focused upon and its status reported. Design with user-accommodation models, it is concluded, would lead to both reduced need for selection and decreases in manning for developed equipment.
