Abstract
This paper describes a cognitive task analysis (CTA) for developing design recommendations to inform the design of a tool that supports interdisciplinary research using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). The Generative Embeddings Network-based Semantic Inference and Search (GENESIS) prototype is being developed to enable researchers to explore and understand fields of knowledge beyond their areas of specialization. CTA findings include a task diagram outlining three main tasks of interdisciplinary research (information seeking, integration, and creation), cognitive requirements associated with each task, and design recommendations for integrating GenAI into the interdisciplinary research process.
