Abstract
This research presents an innovative framework for enhancing collaborative learning through AI-powered group formation in higher education. Traditional group assignment methods often struggle to address instructor cognitive load and student interaction dynamics. Our approach addresses these limitations through a three-component system that balances technological innovation and human factors. The framework uses machine learning algorithms for user-guided clustering to form initial groups, considering learning styles and cognitive load. Interactive AI facilitates the collection of preferences and feedback. Dynamic management capabilities enable real-time monitoring of interaction patterns with an alert system for collaboration issues while maintaining continuous improvement through AI-powered feedback loops. Importantly, our design maintains human oversight through an intuitive instructor dashboard featuring real-time analytical visualization and customizable intervention protocols. Integrating human oversight ensures that AI augments, rather than replaces, human judgment in educational settings. Our empirically validated approach demonstrates that carefully designed AI support can transform group formation and management while maintaining a critical balance between technological advancements and human-centered educational practices, which provides valuable guidance as institutions increasingly adopt AI-powered solutions.
