Abstract
The Panama Canal is a vital resource for international trade, providing an important connection between the world's two largest oceans. However, its future is in doubt due to massive deforestation. Despite environmental laws enacted to protect the watershed areas, Panama lacks the resources to ensure their security. The U.S. Agency for International Development has various programs in Panama to assist their protection needs once control of the canal is in Panamanian hands. Additional international assistance will also greatly assist the Panamanian efforts.
