Abstract
The impact of pollution on the well-being of Dutch citizens in the Netherlands is currently the subject of acrimonious debate between the volunteers of the Dutch NGO (nongovernmental organization) Health and Environment and Dutch doctors of environmental medicine. The volunteers of NGO Health and Envi ronment have challenged the epidemiological approach employed by doctors of environmental medicine by means of the registration of citizens'environmentally related health complaints into a nationwide database. The perspectives of NGO Health and Environment volunteers and doctors of environmental medicine differ radically with regard to (a) how to ascertain exposure to pollutants and (b) how to evaluate environmentally related health complaints from citizens. The objective of this study was to find ways in which NGO Health and Environment and doctors of environmental medicine could work together more closely to better understand how environmental pollution may affect human health in the Netherlands.
