Abstract
The positive Dutch response to the appeal of the Brundtland Commission gives insight into the process of integration of sustainable development in government policy. In light of the crucial role played by nations in the implementation of sustainable development, it is important to analyze how countries like the Netherlands have made concerted efforts towards changes in environmental policy. This article deals with the ensuing external strategies of the Netherlands aimed at reforming and improving the United Nations system in order to promote sustainable development and to prioritize the environment in cooperation development policy. The Dutch experience demonstrates that while it is at first difficult, measurable results can be achieved, even if these results fall short of original expectations.
