Abstract
The degree of international attention focused on Chinese environmental reform has grown considerably in recent years. China's response to interna tional pressure has been limited, and efforts have often been dismissed as token or ineffective. This report attempts to assess the relative validity of the Chinese government's efforts at environmental reform, and examines the political, institutional and economic factors that will affect the future success of comprehensive environmental reform in China.
