Abstract
Latin America is a region rich in biodiversity, yet at the same time struggling under the burdens of economic hardship and rapid population growth. While the region is showing signs of a strong economic recovery, the long-term sustainability of its economic development will hinge upon the ability of today's political leadership to make provisions for the conservation and stewardship of its rich natural resources. This report explores the case of the recently declared Antisana Ecological Reserve, with the purpose of illustrating the difficulties and possibilities of ecosystem conservation in Latin America and the developing world.1
