In this article, we use a worldwide sample of forty mostly preindustrial
societies to test whether in simpler societies women have as many
occupational opportunities as men do, and whether women's share of
occupations rises as societies grow more complex The answers are no

women do, and the proportion of occupations open to women does
not grow as we move from simpler to more complex societies.
