Multivariate analysis is used in a cross-cultural study to determine the
relationship between the sexual division of labor in a number of subsistence
tasks and the value of children. The results demonstrate that children's
work is affected by the adult sexual division of labor. Furthermore, the
presence of domesticated animals in a community may increase the value of children. Where large animals are present, men participate in animal
husbandry, and boys are highly valued.
