Abstract
We indexed and coded footage from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Institutes of Health according to the Outline of Cultural Materials (Murdock et al. 1961). We modified the indexing and coding to increase the utility and specificity required by the users. We indexed down to in dividual frames and sequences in order to permit rapid identification of required and relevant footage. We found that uniform systems and practices of film referencing enable users to examine diversified film footage for cross-cultural research, and help them to cross index written and visual information.
