This paper presents the results of a cross-cultural test; the test supports
a theory of cultural adaptation relating post marital residence and popu
lation size to type of military organization. The theory predicts that
societies with uxorilocal/matrilocal residence or which are large are more
likely to have professional military organizations than are those with
virilocal/patrilocal residence and those which are small.
