Durkheim's proposition that suicide varies inversely with social inte
gration is subjected to a holocultural test, using three indicators of social
integration. Contrary to Durkheim's thesis, suicide is found to vary directly
with societal integration. An explanation of this finding is offered, em
ploying a distinction between the integration of the group as a whole and
the integration of individuals within groups.
