Abstract
Divided land inheritance is the basis for social interaction among rela tines in the peasant villages of the easternmost part of Austria. Special mar riage arrangements, primarily within the kin group, act as a counterbalance to land fragmentation. In frequency, intensity, and its effect on village society as a whole, this kind of interaction among relatives has no counter part among the Austrian peasants in other communities who practice un divided land inheritance.
