Abstract
The export sector has been the highlight of recent U.S. economic performance, underscoring the importance of exporting as a strategic choice in the internationalization of the firm. However, firms commonly face export barriers and seek, or accept, export assistance to overcome them. Public sector organizations are an important source of export assistance. This study examines factors associated with effective use of export assistance by utilizing the results of a mail survey of 89 Minnesota firms assisted by a state agency. The results suggest that the commitment/persistence of management is a more important factor in export promotion than either the export stage or the services used by the firm.
