Abstract
Tears were free flowing when we watched the critically acclaimed series “This Is Us”. The majority of people are immediately struck by the complex and nuanced portrayal of adoption through the character of Randall Pearson. His journey as a transracial adoptee navigating the complexities of family, identity, and race resonates deeply, inviting viewers to confront the multifaceted nature of the adoption experience. In this paper, we aim to explore the effects of understanding adoption through available themes – from screen to reality – and the power in a non-linear story told in “This Is Us,” focusing on how Randall's story sheds light into the narratives of adoptive identity formation and the impact of transracial adoption on family dynamics. Through a close analysis of key episodes and character arcs, we hope to contribute to a more empathetic and deeper understanding of adoption in all its complexity.
