The paper presents a decision-making framework for modeling the design of a discrete part and product for a concurrent engi neering environment. The decision-making aid approach is applied in a situation where the product is existing and needs to be modified or redesigned. The approach comprises mainly of two phases: so called "product realization" and "product optimization." The methodology is applied to a gear box design problem and is implemented in a computerized environment.
