Abstract
Professional tennis enjoys immense popularity with the spectating public. Tournament owners, promoters, hosts, and sponsors have come to recognize the importance of possessing information about those viewing their events, especially data relative to the demographic and economic characteristics of their onsite spectator market. The purpose of this investigation was to ascertain whether the demographic and economic characteristics of professional tennis tournament spectators are universal or unique to a specific geographic locale.
A comparative analysis of the economic and demographic data relative to spectators attending the Volvo International Tennis Tournament held at Stratton Mountain, Vermont, and the United States Men's Clay Court Tournament hosted by Wild Dunes Resort in Charleston, South Carolina, revealed that the results of the two studies were virtually identical. From this finding, it was concluded that the demographic and economic characteristics of spectators attending outdoor professional tennis tournaments held at resort areas during the summer months are universal rather than a function of the geographic locale in which the event is staged.
