Abstract

Serum potassium levels were studied in 2924 ambulatory persons over age 65 to determine the effect of age, sex, diuretics, and creatinine clearance. Women had significantly lower (p < 0.0001) mean serum potassium levels (4.05 mEq/L) compared with men (4.17 mEq/L). When patients taking diuretics were excluded from analysis, the mean serum potassium levels rose to 4.21 mEq/L for women and 4.29 mEq/L for men. Serum potassium levels also were found to increase slightly with advancing age.
