A controlled retrospective study of 20 patients receiving chloramphenicol and phenytoin simultaneously, was performed to evaluate previously reported findings of phenytoin toxicity induced by its interaction with chloramphenicol. Forty-five percent of patients receiving phenytoin and chloramphenicol experienced symptoms indicative of phenytoin toxicity, compared to 0 percent and 9 percent of two control groups, one of which received phenytoin with tetracycline and the other, chloramphenicol alone.
