A case report of a patient who developed water intoxication during carbamazepine therapy is described. The discontinuation of carbamazepine, along with supportive care, resulted in spontaneous diuresis and the resolution of both the laboratory and clinical signs and symptoms of water intoxication.
A review of the literature regarding carbamazepine-associated water intoxication and a discussion of the mechanism of its antidiuretic effect is presented.
