To determine the incidence of diarrhea and colitis associated with antibiotic therapy, a retrospective study utilizing chart reviews, autopsy reports and questionnaires was undertaken. Matched groups of patients who had received clindamycin, tetracycline, or chloramphenicol were studied. The incidence of diarrhea was similar for each group. No instances of colitis were identified. Clindamycin produced no more diarrhea than other antibiotics.
