A case of acute renal failure, hepatic dysfunction and skin and mucous membrane eruption following a course of sulfamethoxazole therapy is reported. Although several cases of multisystem reactions to long acting sulfonamides have been reported, this case describes the first such reaction to sulfamethoxazole.
The subsequent fatal outcome of this case demonstrates the potential significance of sulfamethoxazole hypersensitivity reactions.
