Abstract
What is clinical pharmacy? How is a clinical service established? Cost of service? Benefits to the patients, pharmacists, physician, nurse? Why unit dose drug distribution? Need for pharmacy supportive personnel? Patient drug monitoring service? Drug information services? Effective com-munications with the medical staff? These questions and others will be discussed in this series of articles. Experiences gained by the author from practicing in the patient care area and managing a clinical service will be the basis for the material presented.
The initial article in this issue describes current problems associated with drug therapy in hospitals. The second article will discuss the clinical pharmacy concept. Succeeding articles will present the many components required for clinical pharmaceutical services to serve patients, physicians and hospital personnel.
