Abstract
This paper describes the organization, components, missions, and goals of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Argentina. The Federal Penitentiary Service provides for the custody of all prisoners who are under the jurisdiction of federal courts, provincial prisoners who are sentenced to more than five years imprisonment, and provincial prisoners for whom the province cannot provide adequate facilities. Argentine federal prisoners are predominantly young, male, urban, less educated, and blue-collar. A majority of the prisoners are first offenders and a very large majority are in pretrial confinement. Most pretrial prisoners are released without further judicial action.
