The Effect of a School Registered Nurse Intervention Program on Student Absenteeism

Abstract

The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the impact of targeted registered nurse (RN) activities in schools with high absenteeism rates. This study employed an interventional design gauging the effect of RN interventions on absenteeism in an urban elementary, middle, and high school. No significant change in overall missed days was noted; however, a significant decrease in absence rates for students with chronic health conditions was observed. Common themes for missed days included illness, bullying, and drama at school. Conclusion: RNs can help identify and manage chronic health conditions in school-age children to reduce absenteeism.
