The author serves as a "boundary spanner" to compare and contrast the academic world and the world of the owner-chief executive officer (CEO). Insights gained from 6 years of working closely with these CEOs are directed at helping the academic OB field see itself in a broader perspective and to encourage a shift in emphasis. Implications for teaching, research, and the conduct of one's own career are drawn from this odyssey.
