Abstract
This article is concerned with the education and training of those who are in a position to direct activities in business, government agencies, the health system, and other institutions and organizations. According to the author, running an organization is not the sum of a set of competencies. In addition to a discussion of the need for, and difficulties of, providing for future leader-managers, the article includes five broad principles that should suffuse any degree program or training program that purports to be about leading and managing organizations.
