Abstract
Introduction
Touchscreen technologies are widely used; however, elderly individuals and those with motor impairments often struggle with digital handwriting due to the absence of natural stabilization points.
Materials and Methods
A prototype ergonomic device was developed using polycarbonate plexiglass to replicate natural palm and finger resting points found in traditional handwriting. The device dimensions are 8.5″ H × 9.25″ W × 1.0″ D, optimized for 9.0-inch diagonal tablets.
Results
The device is designed to restore tactile stabilization and support improved handwriting control while reducing unintended touch inputs during simulated tasks including signing, drawing, and scrolling.
Conclusions
This portable, low-cost device improves digital handwriting accessibility for older adults and individuals with motor impairments by reintroducing natural stabilization mechanisms.
