Abstract
Background
Despite of increasing the number of students with disabilities in higher education of Bangladesh, their needs and experiences on using digital technology are yet to be explored.
Purpose
This qualitative study aims to understand the access and engagement of students with disabilities in digital technology at university and also it aims to explore their purpose and context of using digital technology.
Methodology
Multiple case study design was adopted for this study where 10 students with disabilities of a public university were selected purposively as research participants. Semi-structured interview and focus group discussion were employed to gather the data.
Findings
Findings indicated that students with disability use various digital devices such as android smartphone, laptop, and so on for their academic and non-academic purposes. Moreover, several software, apps, and other online services were identified as useful tools in participating at university activities. Also, it indicated that the students were engaged in extensive but largely mundane uses of technology, a bit similar to their non-disabled peers.
Conclusion
The study showcased students’ perception on using digital technology in diverse area of attitudes. The study will guide the university disability support service and policy makers in offering more effective digital technologies and adapting the learning experiences accordingly.
