Abstract
This research was designed to assess special education teachers' perception of the type of child in greatest need of early childhood special education placement. A sample of 123 special education teachers responded to the request to rank order a list of functional skills commonly associated with children 2 years old. The results were factor analyzed and revealed a classification of four types of children: (a) environmentally at-risk children, (b) children lacking gross-motor skills, (c) children lacking readiness and fine-motor skills, and (d) children with marked self-care deficiencies.
