Abstract
The Carolina Institute for Research on Early Education for the Handicapped (CIREEH II) concentrates on the needs of parents of moderately and severely handicapped children from birth to 5 years of age. Nine investigators conduct the institute's three research projects. The Fathers Present, Fathers Absent project involves a series of studies of support in two-parent and single-parent families of handicapped children. The purpose of the Facilitating Parent-Child Reciprocity project is to prepare the way for better parent-child interaction by focusing parental attention on child competence. The F.A.M.I.L.I.E.S. project attempts to (1) learn which family variables can be affected by intervention, (2) provide researchers with valid measures and models, and (3) provide a computer-based system for monitoring statewide intervention programs. The institute also develops materials, disseminates findings, and conducts training.
