Abstract
Studies indicate that students with learning disabilities often receive little instruction in social studies. Social studies is not simply a vehicle for enhancing reading skills but encompasses concepts and skills that are critical to students' eventual participation in our society. This article addresses ways to foster higher level thinking, problem-solving, and group skills by working with issues of importance to students with learning disabilities and promoting their futures as active citizens.
