Abstract
Although the norm of formal, impersonal leader-subordinate relationships often prevails in contemporary organizations, it is proposed that the leadership role may be enhanced by the development of closer, less formal relationships. Using the Leader-Subordinate Friendship Questionnaire (LSFQ), the managerial dilemma of balancing such relationships is addressed. The questionnaire provides a tool for integrating the concept of leader-subordinate friendship into organizational behavior theory and practice by developing a forum for classroom discussion that can be applied to all levels of instruction, including both academic and consulting environments.
