Children's literature is a natural complement to music education. This article suggests four major ways that trade books can support learning in music classes. It will give specific examples of literature that focuses on music and musicians, literature that supports general academic goals through music, literature that helps students understand music concepts, and literature that provides scaffolding for composition. The reader is not only provided with rationale for including literary examples in music instruction but is also given designs for planning lessons.
