Simulations and experiments are often assumed to lead to outcomes strictly on the basis of their design. The authors argue that one can learn a lot about the reasons for the outcomes, the subjects’ views of their experiences, and hence about external validity, by asking debriefing questions. This is a lesson that many researchers have not yet taken to heart.
