Abstract
This is a response to Jan Klabbers's article, "Problem Framing Through Ganing: Learning to Manage Complexity, Uncertainty, and Value Adjustment. " It looks at the original article from three major viewpoints: the methodological, the epistemological, and the ontological. This critical analysis hence examines the reasoning process whereby the actor approach model of learning environment is derived from the machine approach model. Next, it looks at the claims for a differentiation between rationalism and historicism, and the distinction between problem solving and problem framing. Finally, the advocacy for a free-form gaming approach is criticized on pedagogic grounds. Its problematic relation to the representation, understanding, and handling of reality is pointed out. In sum, it is believed that clarification of these points should substantively improve this interesting article.
