Neurite growth initiating activity (NGIA) of several neurotransmitters and neuro trophic factors was assayed by a lone cell culture system of PC12h-R. A relative number of neurite bearing cells (RN) was found as a useful indicator of NGIA. Since the lone cell culture system could eliminate undefined effects inevitably caused by mass culture, the RN changing pattern obtained with each compound was considered to be the response to the specific effect of the compound assayed. The difference of the RN changing patterns suggested the behavior difference of respective com pounds.
