Abstract
The authors review the literature on the relative competence of recovering and nonrecovering counselors and report the findings of a study on the beliefs, preferences, and practices of administrators regarding these two groups. Most administrators believe that the two groups have no differences in effectiveness. Administrators are equally divided between pre/erring a balance of recovering and nonrecovering counselors and having no preference. Implications for policy, practice, and research are discussed.
