Therapeutic interventions with caregiver–infant dyads should seek to prevent the psychopathology associated with developmental events and promote the adaptive development of both members of the dyad. Although it is nearly impossible to remove the stress that accompanies developmental change, this stress may be used in the service of adaptive interpersonal exchange. As a preventive strategy, the promotion of developmental skills offers the possibility of inducing long-term change in the dyad's relationship. One developmental technique, previewing, addresses the needs of both caregiver and infant. Previewing refers to the interpersonal process by which the caregiver rehearses imminent developmental changes with the infant in order to facilitate mastery and competence. Professionals can incorporate previewing techniques into programs for promoting rapport in caregiver–infant dyads, thereby diminishing the potential for psychopathological outcomes.
