The use of alcohol and other drugs is so widespread that most practitioners are likely to have clients with serious alcohol or other drug-abuse problems. However, practitioners who work in nonspecialized programs are likely to miss opportunities to explore these issues due to lack of knowledge and skills required to assess and confront the drug-involved client. They may also possess moralistic and punitive attitudes toward such clients.
