The authors report the findings of a study of ethical decision making using case vignettes that posed ethical dilemmas. Responses among acute-care hospital social workers, child welfare protective service workers, and students in a school of social work are compared with the help of a cost–benefit decision-making framework. Findings indicate that workers are most comfortable when their decisions meet both client wishes and organizational requirements.
