Using a cross-sectional design, Loconto and Dodder (1997) looked at the responses of people with developmental disabilities to the last question—“If you had one wish, what would it be?”—on Oklahoma's statewide survey instrument. Their results suggested that the participants living in community placements expressed desires similar to those of people in the general population. The results of the study reported here seem supportive of Loconto and Dodder's research. When the 28 participants were divided into age categories, however, the authors found that more than 75% of the older adults (n = 102) were still institutionalized as of 1997. Their desire to move was their greatest wish. It remained the largest wish category in both 1991 and 1997.
