Prisons are closed environments that attract much research interest. Individuals from many disciplines are interested in conducting research in prisons. This paper provides basic guidelines for the prison researcher in the form of "helpful hints" to keep in mind while negotiating entry into such an organization and relating with various groups with which one must interact when conducting research in the prison environment. This paper is directed, especially to the novice prison researcher.
